A bone mineral density (BMD) scan is essential at all stages of life and is a valuable tool for assessing bone health and diagnosing conditions such as osteoporosis and low bone density (osteopenia).

A Bone Mineral Density (BMD) scan is a valuable tool for determining bone health, assessing osteoporosis, and guiding preventive and treatment measures to reduce the risk of fractures and maintain bone strength.

BoneHealth BC uses a new, validated technology called Echolight REMS. This radiation-free alternative is FDA and Health Canada approved and widely used in Europe.

  • Osteoporosis is characterized by weak and brittle bones, and osteopenia is characterized by low bone density. Both conditions increase the risk of fractures.

    A BMD scan can detect weak or low bone density early, allowing preventive and proactive measures for treatment and management to avoid serious fractures.

    Women are at a higher risk for osteoporosis than men, and the risk increases with age. Men are also at risk for osteoporosis and osteopenia, and they are significantly underdiagnosed, suggesting that better and earlier assessments can help avoid adverse health outcomes.

  • For individuals undergoing treatment for osteoporosis or other bone-related conditions, regular BMD scans can monitor the effectiveness of the treatment. Changes in bone density over time can indicate whether the treatment is working or if adjustments to treatment and management are needed.

  • A BMD scan can provide valuable information for improving bone health; this may include recommendations for dietary changes, exercise routines, lifestyle modifications, and nutritional supplements and/or prescription medications to strengthen bones and prevent further bone loss.

  • In some cases, low bone density may be a symptom of underlying medical conditions other than osteoporosis. Detecting these conditions early through a BMD scan can prompt further evaluation and treatment.

REPORT


BoneHealth BC provides your report through JaneApp’s secure, confidential transfer portal or via email. Our reports can then be reviewed with your primary care provider, who will develop a bone-health-centered plan.

BoneHealth BC cares about your health, so we work hard to develop and maintain a continuity of care model. This model allows patients, with or without a primary care provider, to access virtual medical care and establish personalized care plans.

Am I a candidate for a bone mineral density scan?

Bone mineral density scans are relevant whether you are 70 or 30—and they’re just as important for a person leading an inactive lifestyle as they are to a person leading an active one.

Bones become stronger when load (i.e. resistance training) is placed on them; therefore, the bones in an inactive person can become weak with a lack of activity.

Knowing your bone density and your risk of bone disease empowers you to take a proactive approach to your bone health.

  • People 45 years of age or greater

  • Peri- and post-menopausal women, or women considering hormone replacement therapy

  • Individuals with chronic gastrointestinal disease and malabsorption

  • Kidney disease patients

  • Post-oncology patients

  • Individuals undergoing injury rehabilitation from falls resulting in wrist, hip, shoulder, or spinal compression fractures

  • High-performance athletes

  • Female athletes dealing with Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S)

  • Individuals with past or present usage of corticosteroids, chemotherapeutics, certain blood thinners, anti-seizure medications, and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for heartburn

Bone health is relevant to all stages of life and is influenced by physical activity, diet, lifestyle, and genetics.

 Adults involved in high-intensity training, with a history of eating disorders, or with specific medication use should consider having their bone health assessed to positively influence their bone health for later in life.

  • All individuals, male and female, over 70 should be assessed for bone mineral density.

    Bone mineral density, along with other clinical information such as medication history, family medical history, and lifestyle, are critical to planning for optimal bone health.

    For some individuals, a bone density scan confirms that their risk of breaking a bone is high enough to need immediate preventative treatment. REMS technology, which provides more detailed and specific fracture information in the form of the Fragility Score, can empower the patient to increase their health span*.

  • For people in their 50s and 60s, bone density continues to decrease, with the breakdown of bone outpacing the formation of new bone.

    DETECTION OF BONE LOSS: A bone mineral density scan in your 50s and 60s can detect any signs of low bone density or accelerated bone loss. Knowing the extent of bone loss can improve health span* by specifically targeting bone density.

    IDENTIFICATION OF RISK FACTORS: Family history, hormonal imbalances, sedentary lifestyle, and dietary habits can contribute to accelerated bone loss and increase the risk of osteoporosis.
